Definition:
Inferencing is when you go beyond the author's words to understand what is not said in the text. "Inferring involves forming a best guess about what the "evidence" (words, sentences, and paragraphs) means; speculating about what's to come; then drawing conlusions." (Hutchins & Zimmerman, 2003) In order to make an inference, readers must combine their schema with evidence in the text to form a conclusion.
